What a great way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Let’s commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy by cleaning up the beach and finding solutions to keeping it that way. 3-5 PM at 54th street and Seashore drive in Newport Beach on the Beach.

We will be at the Talbert overpass at 9:00 AM until noon cleaning up the Santa Ana River bed. We need volunteers to help with our booth. Yes, our 1st Saturday of the month is on for this Saturday April 7 at 54th street and Seashore drive at 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM. If it is as nice as it has been lately you may want to caravan or get there early so you will have time to park a few blocks away. There is metered parking for $1.50 an hour. We will bring gloves and bags and talk about why it is important to rise above plastics. Lisa Manfredi, our youth coordinator will be hosting the cleanup. If you would like to get more involved with protecting the Ocean this will be a great time.

Eight teams braved stiff onshore breezes to finish the 5th Annual RockWater relay race from mountain to ocean, on March 24, 2012.  The teams raced down the Santa Ana River Watershed, collecting trash and raising awareness about how the watershed carries our trash from far inland, all the way to the ocean.

Well done to all our teams! Prizes were awarded to the first team home; the first runners-only team, Quiksilver Foundation Men; the best dressed team, Mo’ Ladies; and the wooden spoon for last in, Florida State. All teams collected large amounts of trash from the watershed and the Quiksilver Foundation brought in a haul large enough to fill a large beach trash can, winning the prize for most trash collected.

Our volunteers and sponsors made this the best race ever. Thanks to Finlandia, Daphne’s, Trader Joe’s, Tattooed Steel, Newmeyer&Dillion, LLP, USGBC-OC, Clif Bar, Kean Coffee, Quiksilver Foundation and Hurley. Please check out our sponsors page and contact us to sponsor next year’s race.
